Virtual Meeting with Mike Krulfeld, November 12, 2020
As with everything in Arlington these days, the Better Sports Club found a new way to continue to meet and enjoy the presentation of a local sports personality. This gathering was the first virtual meeting and presentation.
Just days before Yorktown High School Director of Student Activities, Mike Krulfeld, spoke to the members of the Better Sports Club, Arlington Public Schools reversed its decision on sports programming again. Currently, winter sports will begin in early December and will conclude in February, followed by fall and then spring sports. Each season will see sports completing 60 percent of their seasons in about six weeks. Already teams have begun outdoor conditioning, while following state and local mandated Covid protocols, with great participation. “Teenagers are social and like to congregate. They just want to be part of something and are anxious to come out,” Mike declared. Venues are sharing spaces with athletes of all types. Golfers are taking swings on the warning track of ball diamonds. Gymnasts are turning flips on the synthetic turf fields. But the best day was when Mike found 50 swimmers working outside in the rain. Schools are encouraging wide participation from students without regard to whether they are on a team. Mike spent a few minutes to recognize the Better Sports Club annual student-athlete awards. “They are not like anything else in Arlington. It is a great night to see athletes from all schools come together and cheer for one another.” |
