Dinner with Reid Cherner, April 11, 2018
Reid Cherner had many stories and souvenirs to share with the crowd at the Better Sports Club dinner on April 11. His favorite is a Dodgers jersey that was given to him when he participated in a camp with baseball Hall of Fame greats in Vero Beach, Florida, where he claims to have caught a player skipping a base on his way to home plate. The best part of the week—watching the ball players interact with each other without the cloud of professional competition.
Superbowl XXII was a great year for a Redskin fan. Cherner covered the Redskins win over the Broncos for the back of the Wheaties box and still has a copy at home and on display at the BSC dinner.
Cherner started covering sports in Indiana before moving to Virginia. He worked for USA Today for 33 years before retiring and beginning a second career in fiction writing. He signed copies of his book, Justice for Some, at the BSC event. After a career covering many different sports around the country, and moving from high school to professional leagues, Cherner said, “The higher up I went, the more I wanted to go back to high school sports. That was the single best thing I ever did, and I still go to random games. It is a beautiful thing to watch kids play as hard as they can for as long as they can.”
