Yorktown Wins Two State Titles!
Arlington high school athletes continue their march through state championships, bringing home big wins in 2021.
Just last week, Yorktown High School senior, Owen McArdle, won an individual state championship in cross country at the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 boys state meet on the Great Meadow course in The Plains. He was the first individual state cross country champion in school history, and the first from an Arlington public school in 59 years. “I stayed relaxed through the first two miles, then really hammered the last mile right at the start of going up a hill. That’s my strength,” McArdle said. “The conditions were tough, but I like that.” The Yorktown team fell just shy of the winning the championship. Their second-place finish was the highest in program history. Read more about McArdle and the cross country team here InsideNOVA. A few days later, Yorktown girls field hockey (pictured above) won the Virginia High School League Class 6 state tournament with a 3-0 record. The state title was the first for the Patriot girls, capping an impressive season—finishing 21-1, including a 16-match winning streak. “We had three goals at the start of the season. Win districts, win region and win states,” said first-year Yorktown head coach, Olivia Shipley, who is a Yorktown alumnae who also played field hockey.
