The Road to State Championships
Better Sports Club members and friends were treated to a lively discussion with high school champion coaches Hannah Davis and Greg Beer at the February speaker event that was, once again, relegated to a Zoom call due to Covid conditions in the area.
In the 2019 spring season, before Covid interrupted high school sports, the Yorktown High School Girls Soccer team won the Virginia State Championship. Their opponents scored only nine goals in the regular season. The Patriots did not allow any goals in the championship game. Hannah Davis claims a winning strategy helped secure the win, “We tried to keep possession of the ball as much as possible and let the other team get exhausted chasing. We also had an impressive pool of talent and team leaders who always said exactly what a coach wanted to say, but better.” Greg Beer projected his championship season might happen in 2020 with a team that was stacked with talent. But Covid sidelined that season. Many of the players returned the following year eager to play again. Beer credits the team’s unity and camaraderie for its success. “Teammates who enjoy playing together is the mark of champions,” claimed Davis. “You know you have a great team when players show joy when their teammates are successful.” Both coaches are excited for the 2022 spring season and have high hopes for more great things to happen. |
